Expanse Of Fortune

Solitude among the stars

"Expanse of Fortune is not designed to look like a cold, harsh, unforgiving universe. It is designed to be one."

— EoF Mimir

Expanse of Fortune is a first-person multiplayer sandbox focused on engineering, exploration, colonization and survival in a vast, fully destructible universe. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it delivers a seamless experience — from drilling deep into planetary crusts to surviving vast cosmic expanses, massive asteroid fields, nebulae and other interstellar formations. Explore the uncharted space, extract resources, construct spaceships, build colonies and establish your place among the stars. Create industries, trade, form alliances or wage wars. Every action leaves a mark. Every decision creates consequences that shape the universe around you.

1:1 Scale

The universe is seamless and built at a true 1:1 scale. No loading screens. No invisible walls. No artificial boundaries. No decorative objects that exist only for appearance. Stars, planets, moons, asteroid fields and deep-space formations are not separate levels — they are physical locations within a continuous universe. Explore real-scale planets, asteroid fields, moons, nebulae and other celestial formations. Every distant object is a real physical entity that can be reached, explored and interacted with.

Survival & Life Support

Survival is a constant challenge. Every inhabitant of the universe must manage basic needs, environmental hazards and resource limitations. Food, water, protection, medical treatment and equipment maintenance are essential for long-term survival. Spacesuits require oxygen. Machinery requires upkeep. Vehicles require fuel. Weapons and tools require repairs. Bases and stations require constant maintenance to remain operational. From hostile planetary environments to the emptiness of deep space, survival depends on preparation, resource management and engineering.

Building System

Build everything from the frame up. No predefined hulls. Every ship, vehicle and structure begins as a framework of structural beams. Reinforce it. Enclose it with armor plating. Install power distribution, propulsion, life support and weapon systems according to your own design. Fill it with oxygen if needed. The structural integrity of every construct is determined by its engineering.

Manufacturing System

Nothing is created instantly. Every component, machine and construct begins with a blueprint. Raw resources must be extracted, processed and refined into usable materials. Manufacturing equipment must be constructed before it can produce advanced components. Components must be assembled into functional systems, and systems must be integrated into larger constructs. From the smallest mechanical parts to entire spacecraft and industrial facilities, every creation follows a complete production chain: Design. Manufacture. Assemble. Operate.

A machine required to process resources or manufacture components must itself be built from components created through the same industrial process. Everything beyond the natural environment is the result of engineering, resources and time. Every object in the universe has a history of resource extraction, manufacturing, logistics, combat and time effort behind it.

Destruction System

Every structure is destructible. Every asset is lootable. Launch assaults beneath the surface, fight across planetary terrain, in the atmospheres, or in space. Structural integrity of any constructs is governed by physics. Walls cripple under sustained fire. Windows fracture on impact. Critical systems can detonate, causing cascading explosions capable of destroying entire installations. Whatever survives the engagement can be salvaged.

Full Loot Combat System

Combat can occur anywhere. There are no safe zones. Fight underground, across the terrain, in the atmospheres or in deep space. Every projectile follows a physical trajectory. Every impact damages the structure it strikes. Armor fails where it is penetrated. Critical systems become vulnerable as defensive layers are destroyed. Explosive weapons generate blast waves capable of propagating through confined spaces, damaging personnel and internal systems well beyond the visible fireball. From ground infantry operations to spacefleet engagements, every battlefield follows the same physical rules.

Death has consequences. When you die — you lose your entire inventory. Every item you carried remains where it was lost. Every asset or part of equipment can be recovered by allies, salvaged by strangers, or claimed by whoever reaches it first. The environment is as dangerous as other players. Hostile wildlife, extreme conditions and human conflict all follow the same rule: adapt or die. Survive or lose everything.

Persistent Sandbox Universe

The universe persists. Its fate is determined by its inhabitants. Constructs remain where they are built. Wrecks remain where they were left. Wars leave permanent scars. Economies are driven by player activity. Territories belong to those who can defend them. There are no scheduled wipes. Lost assets are not restored. Territorial disputes, political conflicts, economic competition and other in-game affairs are never resolved through developer intervention. Every celestial base, vessel and space station exists only as long as it remains undiscovered by those capable of destroying or claiming it. History is written by those who survive.

Immersive Social Relations

The universe does not provide social arbitration. Expanse of Fortune takes place in a distant galaxy. The social norms of old Earth do not define the daily life of its inhabitants. Players are free to negotiate, cooperate, compete, deceive and oppose each other according to their own choices. Alliances are formed, enemies are made, and reputations are earned through actions. Trade agreements can be honored or broken. Markets can be manipulated. Corporations can rise, betray their allies or collapse from internal conflicts. The developers do not intervene in personal disputes. Every form of social interaction — from diplomacy and cooperation to rivalry, deception and conflict — adds to the universe. Every conflict, verbal or physical, becomes part of the history. The fate of every outcome is decided by the involved.

FAQ

1. What genre is Expanse of Fortune?

Expanse of Fortune is a first-person multiplayer game that combines elements of survival, FPS and space simulation. You play as a single character, constructing ground, underground and orbital facilities, as well as designing and operating vehicles of all kinds. When you want to pilot a spacecraft, you physically walk to the cockpit, sit in the pilot's seat and fly the ship from a true first-person perspective. There are no abstract menus or detached camera modes — you experience the universe through the eyes of your character.

2. What business model will the game use? Will there be a subscription, F2P or pay-to-win?

Expanse of Fortune will be distributed through Steam. The current plan is a buy-to-play model with no subscription. At some point after release we intend to offer cosmetic items for purchase. However, pay-to-win will never be part of the game. Ever. We will only sell cosmetic skins and decorative items that have absolutely no effect on gameplay, progression or game balance.

3. How many servers will there be?

One. Expanse of Fortune is designed as a single-shard universe. Every player exists in the same persistent world. There are no separate realms, regions or parallel servers splitting the player base.

4. Is Expanse of Fortune an MMO?

Not yet. At the moment we simply do not have the financial resources or technical capacity to build a true MMO at the scale we envision. Our goal is to move steadily toward that vision with every major update. Every new feature and every technological improvement brings the project closer to becoming the large-scale persistent universe we ultimately want to create.

5. How complex is the medical system?

During the Closed Pre-Alpha, the medical system will be intentionally simple. Eat food to restore health. Use a medkit to heal injuries. Later, the game will receive a major medical update introducing a wide range of diseases, injuries and medical conditions with multiple stages of progression. At that point, basic medkits will no longer be enough. Different illnesses will require specialized medicine, diagnostic equipment and advanced medical devices, all of which will become part of the game's industrial and survival systems. Some conditions will be genuinely unpleasant. Certain chemicals may cause temporary color blindness, muscle paralysis or complete loss of vision. Others may cause symptoms such as involuntary spasms, severe disorientation, flatulence or Tourette-like vocal tics — all of which can completely ruin an otherwise perfect stealth operation.

6. Is building grid-based or completely freeform?

The universe itself has no global grid. However, when constructing a vehicle or structure, a local construction grid is generated by the structural elements themselves. This allows precise placement while keeping the world completely seamless.

7. Is the game limited to a single planet or star system?

No. The first star system already includes a planet and several moons. Asteroid rings and asteroid clusters are currently under development. Once the first system reaches the level of detail we expect, additional star systems will be introduced. Our long-term goal is simple: if the project succeeds, we want Expanse of Fortune to grow into an entire galaxy.

8. How extensive is the terraforming system?

All planets are fully voxelized. Players can excavate approximately 5 kilometers into a planetary crust. Within that depth, terrain can be modified freely in any direction, allowing the construction of underground facilities, tunnels, bunkers and mining complexes. Some loose surface materials, such as sand, will gradually settle over time, naturally concealing tunnel entrances and underground infrastructure.

9. How punishing is death?

At the beginning of development, death will not be particularly severe because the skill system has not yet been implemented and you dont lose them when you die. When your character dies, you lose everything you were carrying and respawn either at the NPC medical center or inside your own Respawn Chamber, provided it is operational. Each respawn consumes energy and biological materials, which are used to assemble a new body inside the chamber. Respawning at an NPC station is always free of charge. As additional progression systems are introduced, death will become increasingly meaningful.

10. No Sweet Baby Inc. detected.

What?

11. Is there a survival system with food and water?

Absolutely. Survival is one of the core pillars of Expanse of Fortune. Your character must eat to avoid starvation, drink to avoid dehydration, rest to recover stamina and avoid exhaustion, and receive proper medical treatment to survive injuries and disease. During the early stages of development, these mechanics will remain relatively simple so they can be properly tested and balanced. Over time, we plan to expand every survival system with additional mechanics, equipment and gameplay. Our goal is not to make survival less demanding over time — but more immersive.

12. How does the economy work?

The economy is designed to be almost entirely player-driven. Our goal is for nearly every item in the universe to be either manufactured by players or recovered through exploration, combat or salvaging. Resources are extracted by players. Components are manufactured by players. Vehicles, weapons, machinery and stations are built by players. The developers provide the universe. The players create its economy.

13. How demanding is the game in terms of playtime?

Expanse of Fortune is not a session-based game. The universe exists whether you are online or not. If you want to play, you log in. If you don't, you log out. The universe continues without you. If your base is attacked while you're offline and you receive a notification, you can log in and defend it — or continue sleeping. The choice is always yours.

15. How punishing is losing your loot?

Death is absolute. When your character dies, every item they were carrying remains at the location of death. You respawn with nothing. If you reach your body before anyone else, you can recover your equipment. If someone else gets there first, everything you carried becomes theirs. No protected inventories. No exceptions.

16. How do you plan to deal with cheaters and RMT?

Cheating, botting and real-money trading (RMT) are strictly prohibited and will result in a permanent ban. We cannot disclose the methods we use to detect or combat them, as doing so would only help those attempting to circumvent them.

17. How does character progression work?

Expanse of Fortune does not use traditional character levels. Progression is based on a skill system that allows you to specialize in the areas that interest you most. There are no rigid classes or predefined roles. You are free to train any combination of skills and develop your character according to your preferred playstyle. Skill training takes place passively, similar to the progression systems found in some MMORPGs. However, because Expanse of Fortune is fundamentally an engineering and construction sandbox, the majority of skills are focused on industry, manufacturing, construction, logistics and resource extraction rather than direct combat. Combat is something that you can always do, as all it takes is pulling the trigger. This also means that skill points are not a substitute for player ability. If a new player is placed in the cockpit of a top-tier fighter, they can fly and fight just as effectively as a veteran, provided they have the knowledge and skill to do so. Character progression expands your capabilities—it does not replace personal experience. Even at the very beginning of the game, players will have access to a wide range of construction tools, industrial equipment and military hardware. Skills unlock specialization rather than basic functionality. We intentionally plan to include dozens of materials and hundreds of structural block shapes, ensuring that your engineering possibilities remain limited by creativity — not by artificial progression.

18. Will flying in space feel different from flying in an atmosphere?

Yes. Atmospheric flight will be fundamentally different from spaceflight. Flying through an atmosphere will generally be slower due to aerodynamic resistance, and warp travel will not be possible until your spacecraft leaves the atmosphere. We are also considering aerodynamic heating at extreme velocities. Spacecraft entering or traveling through an atmosphere too quickly may experience structural overheating, causing blocks and external components to burn away or disintegrate if the vehicle is not designed to withstand the stress.

19. Will the developers actually play the game?

Yes. In fact, every developer is expected to play Expanse of Fortune. We believe that building a sandbox without actively living in it is the fastest way to lose touch with reality. Developers should understand the game not only through analytics and bug reports, but through firsthand experience. Playing the game helps us identify genuine design problems, distinguish them from ordinary frustration, and understand where the experience truly needs improvement. To prevent abuse, developer accounts will remain anonymous. Their in-game identities will never be disclosed to the community, and their activity will be monitored internally. Abusing developer privileges or revealing a developer account to other players is considered THE most serious violation of the company policy and will result in disciplinary action, including but not limited to a premanent ban and dismissal.

20. Does the game use blueprints?

Yes. Every manufactured object in Expanse of Fortune begins with a blueprint. Blueprints define the components, materials and production steps required to manufacture an item. From structural beams and electronic circuits to spacecraft engines and industrial machinery, every object follows the same manufacturing principles. There are no instant 'casual' crafting recipes. Every advanced construct is the result of careful planning, resource gathering and production.

21. Can my base or ship be completely destroyed?

Yes. Nothing built by players is indestructible. Every structural beam, armor plate, machine and power system can be damaged or destroyed. A damaged reactor may explode. A collapsed support structure may bring down an entire skyscraper. A destroyed fuel system may leave a ship stranded in deep space. If you build it, someone can destroy it.

22. Is there structural integrity?

Yes. Every construct is assembled around a structural frame. Beams carry loads. Armor protects beams and internal compartments. Machinery must be properly integrated into the structure. Poor engineering results in weak constructs that have poorer performance and are are easier to destroy. A well-designed ship or station survives because there is a better engineering behind it — not because it has more hit points.

23. Can I build anything I want?

Almost. Expanse of Fortune uses a construction system that allows players to design vehicles, buildings and industrial facilities from individual structural elements. The only real limitations are engine limits, available resources and your engineering ability.

24. Does the universe reset?

No. There are no scheduled wipes. The universe is always there. Constructs remain where they were built. Wrecks remain where they were left. Underground tunnels remain where they were excavated. History is never erased. Everything remains forever.

25. Are there safe zones?

Only where they make sense. Some starter NPC settlements and certain protected locations may fully or partially restrict hostile actions inside a small area. Outside of those areas, the universe does not protect you. Your safety depends on your own preparation, your allies and your ability to defend yourself.

26. Is there offline protection for bases?

No. Expanse of Fortune is a persistent sandbox. Your colony continues to exist while you are offline. If someone discovers it, they may attack it. The best defense is good engineering, careful planning, strong allies and a location that is difficult to discover.

27. Can I dig through an entire mountain or a planet?

Yes and no. Terraforming is not limited to surface excavation. Players can excavate deep underground, creating mines, tunnels, bunkers and hidden industrial complexes. The terrain becomes part of your infrastructure. However one cannot dig through the entire planet, as there is always a solid crust barrier, which is located some kilometers below the surface, preventing anyone to dig down to the mantle.

28. Will there be private servers?

No. Expanse of Fortune is designed as a single persistent universe. Every player shares the same galaxy. Splitting the community across private servers would undermine the player-driven economy, politics and history that define the game.

29. Are NPC factions important?

Yes. NPC organizations are part of the living universe and may participate in its economy and conflicts. However, they are not intended to replace players. The long-term history of the universe is written by the players, not by NPCs.

30. Why are there no wipes?

a) Because EoF is not a small 4x4km island, it is the star system that is way too big, even for thousands of players. b) Because actions should have consequences. Building an empire takes time. Destroying one should matter. A persistent universe allows history, politics, economies and conflicts to develop naturally over years instead of being erased every few weeks or months.

31. Can I scam and betray other players?

Yes. Expanse of Fortune is a sandbox. Fraud, deception, espionage, infiltration, corporate theft, market manipulation and other forms of non-technical player interaction are legitimate gameplay. Trust is one of the most valuable resources in the universe. However, abusing exploits, cheating, hacking, real-money trading and such remain strictly prohibited.

32. Can I grief other players?

If it is achieved through normal gameplay, yes. Piracy, blockades, territorial control, ambushes, economic warfare and other forms of player conflict are all legitimate parts of the sandbox. The developers do not act as social arbitrators. Conflicts between players should be resolved by the players whenever possible.

33. Why don't developers intervene in player conflicts?

Because intervention changes history. The purpose of Expanse of Fortune is to create a universe where actions have permanent consequences. Players shape the universe. Developers fix bugs. They are not here to babysit you.

34. Can my colony disappear forever?

Yes. Every colony, station, ship and industrial complex exists only as long as its owners can protect and maintain it. Abandoned structures gradually decay, untill they become a wreckage. Unprotected structures are eventually discovered. Discovered structures are eventually raided, looted or destroyed. Nothing lasts forever.

35. Can I play alone?

Yes. Every activity in Expanse of Fortune can be performed alone. However, large industrial projects, territorial expansion and military operations naturally become more efficient when players cooperate. The universe does not require you to join an organization — but it rewards those who do.

36. Is there a maximum organization size?

No. There are no artificial limits on the size of corporations or alliances. Every organization grows or collapses according to its ability to recruit, organize, produce and defend its assets.

37. Can I capture another player's ship?

Yes. A ship does not cease to exist because its owner dies. If you can board it, secure it and operate it, it becomes yours.

38. Can I steal from other players?

Yes. Containers, stations, industrial facilities and transport vessels can all become targets if their owners fail to secure them. The universe rewards preparation and punishes negligence.

39. Can ships run out of fuel?

Yes. Every vehicle requires energy and, where applicable, propellant to operate. Running out of fuel in deep space is a problem that must be solved — otherwise your ship will be there forever.

40. Is there gravity?

Yes. Large celestial bodies generate gravity wells according to their physical properties (size, etc). Gravity affects movement, fall speed, construction, flight and orbital operations.

41. Is there atmospheric flight?

Yes. As it was said before, atmospheres affect aerodynamics, propulsion and heat generation. A spacecraft designed for vacuum may perform poorly — or fail entirely—inside a dense atmosphere. And vise versa.

42. Can I build factories?

Yes. Industrial production is one of the core gameplay systems. Factories process raw materials into components, manufacture machinery and support large-scale engineering projects. The larger your industry becomes, the more infrastructure it requires.

43. Can production be automated?

Partially. Automation is an important part of industrial gameplay. However, designing, supplying and maintaining automated production lines remains the responsibility of players. Automation reduces repetitive work. It does not eliminate logistics.

44. Can I live entirely in space?

Yes. A sufficiently equipped spacecraft, asteroid base or a space station can function as a permanent home. As long as you can produce resources, maintain life support and defend your construct, there is no requirement to return to a planet.

45. Are planets procedurally generated?

Yes and no. The landscapes are procedurally generated. However the sizes and locations are all done by hand. Procedural tools assist development, but the final result is a matter of well-thought design rather than a random one-button generation. Our goal is to create believable worlds — not infinite variations of the same terrain. At some point we will of course use PCG to build an entire galaxy, because otherwise it will be impossible.

46. Can I destroy an entire planet?

No. Planets are enormous. They are all 1:1 scale. For example the starting planet is almost matches the size of Earth. While players can terraform significant portions of the crust and build massive underground infrastructure, destroying an entire planet is far beyond the scope of Expanse of Fortune.

47. Why first-person only?

Because immersion matters. You are not controlling a character. You ARE the character. Every machine is operated from inside. Every structure is built by your own hands. Every victory and every mistake — is experienced from your own perspective. You must look at everything with your own eyes. Not from a flying camera.

48. Is there fast travel?

No. Distance is part of the gameplay. Moving people, cargo and equipment across the universe requires planning, logistics and infrastructure. Even with FTL technology, travel should create opportunities — not remove them.

49. What is the ultimate goal of Expanse of Fortune?

There isn't one. Expanse of Fortune does not provide a predefined ending or a single path to success. Your objectives are your own. Build an industrial empire. Lead a military alliance. Become a trader, explorer, pirate or engineer. Or simply survive. The universe does not tell you what your story should be. It only remembers what happened.

50. What is the design philosophy behind Expanse of Fortune?

Every mechanic in Expanse of Fortune is built around a simple principle: Actions have consequences. The universe does not exist to entertain you. It exists independently of you. Nothing is created without effort. Nothing valuable is perfectly safe. Nothing lasts forever. Loss gives value to creation. Risk gives meaning to success. Trust exists because betrayal is possible. Industry matters because everything must be manufactured. Logistics matter because distance cannot be ignored. Engineering matters because poor design eventually fails. The universe does not protect the weak, punish the strong or guarantee fair outcomes. It rewards preparation, knowledge, cooperation and persistence. Players create the economy. Players create politics. Players create history. The developers are here only to introduce new content and fix bugs. Its is up to players to decide what it becomes. Expanse of Fortune is not about winning. It is about surviving. Expanse of Fortune is a universe, that owes you nothing. It is not fair. It never was.
